Our last top 10 presented the top ten contributors to the Swiss watch business ranked by their 2013 sales. Its ex-factory prices start at 10,000 Swiss francs, putting the traditional brand at the highest level of luxury watchmaking. 10. Hublot & Zenith. The two sister brands of the LVMH group are tied in tenth place with 40,000 units sold in 2013. Comparison is not reason Warning! Making a list means making choices, favouring one indicator over another. Doing so in the fragmented luxury watch segment is even more challenging. A different look Firstly, there is a significant absence of bulk with this titanium model. Although it measures a substantial 45mm in diameter, it is slim and light. Secondly, the model employs, surprisingly for Hublot, a limited number of different materials. The Swiss brand has combined titanium with just a soup?on of black composite resin on the case band next to the crown and adjacent 9 o’clock. The result confers a muted and very tasteful aesthetic. By adopting this design language, I suspect that Hublot has engaged with a different audience who may otherwise have been put off by the brand’s more extrovert offerings. Dial detail The “white Shiny Dial” has a pure, chaste complexion. The word, “shiny” may conjure thoughts of a flamboyant persona, however, this is not the case.
